Ashokan Rail Trail
Eleven and a half miles of car-free trail along the north shore of the Ashokan Reservoir, open to walkers, runners, cyclists, and cross-country skiers year-round. Woodstock Land Conservancy partners with Ulster County on its stewardship.
About the trail
The Ashokan Rail Trail follows the former Ulster & Delaware rail corridor from West Hurley to Boiceville, passing reservoir overlooks, wetlands, and hardwood forest along the way. The trail is owned by New York City DEP and managed by Ulster County, with support from partners including Woodstock Land Conservancy.
The trail is open sunrise to sunset. Motorized vehicles are prohibited, dogs must be leashed, and visitors are asked to stay on the trail to protect the surrounding watershed lands.

Become an ART Steward
Interested in volunteering at the Ashokan Rail Trail? Join our cohort of dedicated volunteers keeping the trail accessible, safe, and fun all year long.
Stewards play an important role in identifying maintenance needs, reporting issues to Ulster County so they can be addressed quickly, and helping visitors enjoy the trail safely and respectfully while protecting the sensitive lands and waters surrounding the Ashokan Reservoir.
Volunteers are asked to visit the trail regularly and commit to occasional shifts on peak weekends and holidays between spring and fall. Though not a requirement, Stewards often visit the trail by bicycle to cover the largest stretch of trail in the shortest amount of time.
Complete the form and someone will follow up with more information about Steward training and next steps.
