Poetry Meet Up Combines Nature with Art

More than a dozen attendees gathered at Zena Cornfield in early July to celebrate the release of Time Under the Overlook, the new book by Guy Reed, now available from Bushwhack Books. To open the event, Bushwhack Books owner and esteemed local author Will Nixon shared a brief history of poets in the area. He spoke fondly of poet Hart Crane’s year living on Plochmann Avenue, where Crane reportedly loved watching the leaves turn orange in the fall.

After presentations by Reed and Nixon, participants shared their favorite poems about nature, including selections by many local poets. These included works by Bill Keller, Tom Fletcher, Alison Koffler — one of the “Slabsides poets,” and Edmund Baranowski, known as “the wandering poet.”

The group gathered around the picnic table at the entrance to the cornfield, a gift from the Hausman family to honor Joy Hopkins-Hausman. It seemed particularly fitting as several attendees read poems from poets who have passed away but still bring joy — and a few tears — to those who appreciate their enduring legacies.

We’re fortunate to have such a vibrant community that includes many talented poets. At WLC, we believe the awe-inspiring landscapes of the Hudson Valley might have something to do with it. Community member Stacy Fine agrees and is working to continue this gathering. Email us at info@woodstocklandconservancy.org, and we will connect you to Stacy.
